(Geronimo) — A live ceremony is also on the calendar for the graduating class of Navarro High School. Those plans do include a ceremony on Friday, June 26 at 8 p.m. at Erwin-Lee Field, the high school’s football stadium.

High School Principal Gary Haas says the district is grateful to be able to have its seniors walk the stage. However due to social distancing and other safety practices, things will be different.

“Unless we have something to derail the event, changes in the current safety protocols or something that comes out from the county or from the state – one way or another — if it changes it for us, there’s going to be a lot of adjustment to that but the biggest will be that it will be attendance by ticket only and there are a significant number of COVID protocols that are going to be adhered to, to make sure that it is a safe environment for everyone involved. The only people in attendance will be by ticket and the students will each get four tickets and all the people that are coming in, including the students, will actually have had to have done a self-assessment that they will have to check and sign-off on before coming into the stadium for COVID symptoms,” said Haas.

Haas says although these are the plans now, there’s always room for loosening up the safety measures, but until then, families of all seniors know what is expected that evening.

“I would love in the last 10 days or something before this event to be able to say ‘don’t worry about the tickets. Whoever wants to come can come.’ That would be outstanding. I think that it is highly unlikely, but we will adjust it as possible. Like I said, unfortunately, you might have to adjust in the other direction. One of the things that is a little different this year – we will have a live stream as we’ve had the last few years. We will not have any indoor remote viewing on the campuses this year,” said Haas.

Haas says the other only thing at this point that could throw the plans for a live ceremony for Navarro would be the weather.

“The other thing that will be a little different this year in regard to that piece is we have had a back up in the recent years to go into our Events Center if we had inclement weather and we made that call almost a day out but in the event that we have what would be a weather cancellation of the outside piece this year, it would not be a live ceremony if that were to happen. We would make an adjustment. We are in the process – our technology department is putting together a virtual ceremony as well, side by side with this. Part of it will be shared at graduation probably either on our big scoreboard or it will be incorporated into our graduation ceremony. If we get rained out, it will be strictly virtual,” said Haas.

The original graduation date for Navarro High School would have been Friday, May 29.
