A couple decades of leading what has become a billion-dollar company is about enough, said Alamo Group Inc. President/CEO Ron Robinson in announcing his upcoming retirement.

Robinson said he plans to step down around the middle of 2021 after the company determines who will replace him at the manufacturing company’s corporate headquarter in Seguin.

“After 21 years, I thinks it’s getting to be about that time,” he said. “I’m at an age, I’m 68 now, I will be 69 by the time I retire. I will stay on the board of the company, that’s my intent, but I think after 21 years, it’s time to let someone else do it.

“I want to spend more time with my family.”

Alamo Group announced Robinson’s impending departure on Tuesday. Company board directors have been preparing for a transition and look forward to naming a successor within the next few months.

Robinson said he will remain a part of Seguin even after he stops tending to day-to-day operations at the publicly-traded company.

“I’ll still be on the board of directors,” he said. “So I assume I will be here regularly.”

During a transition period for the company, Robinson took his current job 21 years ago, he said. Over the years, he has seen Alamo Group continue to prosper, Robinson said.

He said he’s worked with talented and dedicated people who will continue that growth and future success.

The continued growth and success under his leadership are hallmarks of his tenure so far with the company, Robinson said.

“When I joined the company, they were about $176 million in sales the year I joined them,” he said. “Last year, we were over a billion dollars and even in spite of COVID, we will grow this year.

“The company has been able to steadily grow in sales and in profitability.”

Alamo Group is traded on the New York Stock Exchange, Robinson said. And while there are bigger companies in Seguin, he believes his is the only publicly-traded one with corporate headquarters in town.

The status helps to bring renown to Seguin, which helps in attracting new industry and continuing the city’s thriving ways.

“We have been based here form the start, over 50 years,” Robinson said. “We’ve only been public since ’93, only 27 years, but as 27 years public and based in Seguin, that brings some recognition to the town.”

Alamo Group designs, manufactures, distributes and services equipment for infrastructure maintenance, agriculture and other applications, according to a statement the company released. Products include truck and tractor mounted mowing and other vegetation maintenance equipment, street sweepers, snow remove equipment, excavators, vacuum trucks and more.

Roderick R. Baty, Alamo Group’s board chairman, extended gratitude to Robinson for his 21 years of leadership and service. Robinson helped grow the company from a small, domestically-focused company with nine manufacturing locations to a multinational company with 27 manufacturing locations globally.

““Because of Ron’s stewardship, Alamo Group today is positioned as a financially sound and operationally strong company with significant opportunities for continued growth in the future,” Baty said. “To our stakeholders — customers, dealers, employees, suppliers and shareholders, we wish to thank you for your support and acknowledge your contributions to the remarkable success of Alamo Group during Ron’s tenure. While we will miss Ron’s leadership as CEO, we look forward to his ongoing participation as a member of the board of directors.”
