(Seguin) — The doors to city facilities that are rented out or utilized by large groups will have to wait a little while longer before reopening. That’s the latest word from city of Seguin officials.

As a result of an increase in COVID-19 cases in Seguin and Guadalupe County, all private or public events held on city property will continue to be cancelled through Feb. 28. This includes but is not limited to bookings at the Seguin Events Complex which consist of the Coliseum and Fairgrounds.

It was back in December when city officials first put a stop to the rental or use of those facilities. At the time, they had hoped that the city would be in a position on Feb. 1 to reopen those facilities. However, the current climate of the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t making that possible.

Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen says it just would not be responsible for them to allow the use of those facilities at this time.

“The numbers have stayed the same and the hospital numbers for hospitalization have stayed the same and so I don’t want any burden on anyone, and I can not condone activity that brings people together to spread this at the moment. We just can’t handle it right now. I know my overall objective is community health and for the health of our community, I need to be proactive and not condone large gatherings,” said Dodgen.

Dodgen, in moving forward, says she wishes she had an answer for all those who are asking, then when?

“I don’t have a clue. It is a day at a time, and I will evaluate it week by week. I’ve had multiple calls and looking at those numbers and looking at the percent of our hospital rooms for our region, it has been consistent for the last seven or eight days over 26 percent. It was higher than that, but I have to wait and see what happens with that and I have to wait and see what our hospital needs and what our providers need and our town and our community. It’s a week by week. Sometimes, day by day. So, I guess the answer is ‘I don’t know,’” said Dodgen.

Dodgen says it pains the city to also close off any of its facilities to the public. Dodgen says no one is immune to the stress of this pandemic.

“Please keep helping each other. Keep doing for each other. Please keep wearing your mask, washing your hands, staying a safe distance apart and supporting each other. We need each other right now. It’s crazy and I know we are all tired of this. Just hang on,” said Dodgen.

Again, the city of Seguin has cancelled all public and private events at its properties. Although, the cancellation is through Feb. 28, the city will assess the situation each week and will decide then on any changes if needed. City officials remind individuals that full refunds will be provided to those who had booked events.
