U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE INVESTS $860,000 IN CARES ACT RECOVERY ASSISTANCE TO SUPPORT ECONOMIC GROWTH AND RESILIENCY EFFORTS IN SEGUIN, TEXAS

SEGUIN, TX – The City of Seguin, in partnership with the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), has been awarded an $860,000 CARES Act Recovery Assistance grant through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA). The EDA Grant will support the expansion of the SEDC’s Rio Nogales Industrial Park by covering engineering design, permitting and construction costs needed to extend 8th Street. The project will matched with $215,000 in local investment from the City of Seguin and the SEDC.

“We are extremely excited to be awarded this grant through the U.S. EDA”, said Josh Schneuker, Director of Economic Development for the City of Seguin. “The extension of 8th Street will help ensure long-term economic success for the manufacturers currently operating within the Industrial Park, while also influencing future investments and job creation.”

The SEDC’s Rio Nogales Industrial Park is home to the CPS Energy Rio Nogales Power Plant, Niagara Bottling, United Alloy, and Continental Structural Plastics. In July 2020, the SEDC announced that CoffeeTech Industries would be building their future headquarters and manufacturing facility within the Industrial Park. The extension of 8th street, funded through the EDA Grant, will be approximately 750 linear feet long and 43 feet wide. The project also includes a truck turnaround that will be constructed at the south end of 8th Street. In addition to providing a turnaround for trucks, the cul-de-sac will also provide an access to the southernmost property.

Seguin Mayor, Donna Dodgen said, “We feel very fortunate that the Economic Development Administration is investing these grant funds here in Seguin. Securing this grant would not be possible without the support of our U.S. Senators, Mr. John Cornyn and Mr. Ted Cruz, as well as our U.S. Congressman, Mr. Vicente Gonzalez. I am confident that this investment will accelerate business growth and diversification in Seguin.”

This project is funded under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act (Public Law 116-136 PDF), which provided EDA with $1.5 billion for economic assistance programs to help communities prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus. EDA CARES Act Recovery Assistance, which is being administered under the authority of the bureau’s flexible Economic Adjustment Assistance (EAA) (PDF) program, provides a wide-range of financial assistance to eligible communities and regions as they respond to and recover from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.
