(Seguin) — Seguin Main Street is pleased to announce the launch of the public input phase of the Downtown Master Plan. Since hiring Freese and Nichols, Inc to develop the plan, the firm has been busy researching Seguin and getting acquainted with the community. The firm is now ready to start hearing the opinions, hopes, dreams, and concerns of our Seguin residents.

“One important aspect of downtowns is that they don’t just belong to people that live downtown or own businesses—they belong to everyone that calls Seguin home in some way,” said Chance Sparks, Associate with Fresse and Nichols, Inc’s Urban Planning & Design Group, “They are such an important part of a community’s identity, especially a growing community like Seguin. It is critical for us to understand the experiences of everyone to help chart an effective course for downtown’s future.”

A website for Seguin’s Downtown Master Plan is now live at www.planseguindt.com. Visitors to the site will find a link called “Get Involved” where they can take a survey and use the mapping tool. The survey and mapping tool will be live from now until January 15.

The survey asks how you currently use downtown, what you like about downtown, what you want to see come to downtown, what prevents you from coming downtown and other questions. The survey results will drive the direction and prioritization of the plan’s goals.

“One of the features we are excited about is the mapping tool,” said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB Director, “On the same page with the survey is a link to the mapping tool where people can drop a pin on a building, an intersection, or wherever and leave a comment about that particular space.”

On the top of the map are five different pins entitled Building Design, Business and Use, Public Space, Safety, and Other Idea. If you feel that crossing Court Street at River Street is unsafe, you simple drag the Safety pin down to the River and Court Street intersection. After dropping the pin, you will need to include a comment with more details, leave your email, and put whether it is an opportunity, issue, or idea. You will also be able to upload any photos.

After a pin is submitted, others will be able to click like or dislike on the pin to show support or disagreement with the pin’s topic.

“We really hope the public gets involved with the survey and the map because downtown really belongs to the whole community,” said Kramm, “And the only way for us to ensure the whole community feels welcome in downtown is to hear from everyone about their vision for what downtown will look like in 20 years.”

Public meetings will be scheduled later in the winter for people to attend and discuss their ideas further in person with staff and the consultants. The dates for these meetings will be posted on the web site, www.planseguindt.com.

In addition to the new Downtown Master Plan, the City of Seguin is also updating its Comprehensive Plan. There is a separate web site and survey for that plan. Please also visit www.PlanSeguin.com to share your vision for all of Seguin’s future.
