(Seguin) — The Seguin Sunrise Rotary Club hopes that you will help it to invest in the future of some well deserving students in the Seguin and Navarro school districts.
The club is hosting its Scholarship Bash/Buckaroo Sweetheart Dinner & Dance this Saturday at the Big Red Barn.

Sunrise Rotary member Dennis Clarkson says it will be a great party, and it’s all set up so that they can provide scholarships to students in the Seguin area.

“This is the deal where we benefit the kids at Navarro High School and Seguin and what we’ve been doing for years in giving them the scholarships and what it originally started with was the Timmermann Sisters Cookbook and everybody remembers the Timmermann Sisters, wonderful folks and very great for the community and they are the ones that we sold their cookbook and raised $75,000 initially to start this and from then on, we’ve just been moving on. It’s a great event and you come out and have a great time, dinner, dancing, family activities going on. We’ve got silent auction items. Tin Roof is going to be playing. It’s going to be a neat event,” said Clarkson.

Rotarian Kelly Schievelbein says this is the second time that they’ve hosted the event. The first one was held just before the start of the pandemic. In fact, it was one of the last public events in Seguin before COVID-19 really began to change our lives. She says they are glad to be able to again host this fun event. She says this dinner and dance is a laid-back affair, and everyone is welcome to attend.

“You come in your jeans. Come in your casual attire. Come ready to have fun. Spend money for a great cause giving kids scholarships,” said Schievelbein.

The money raised on Saturday will go directly in the Sunrise Rotary Club’s scholarship fund. Clarkson says they focus some of their scholarship money on students, who might otherwise be overlooked by the regular scholarship process. He says some of the scholarship recipients are chosen when they first arrive on a high school campus.

“Years ago, we started some of these scholarships and what they are is actually we give the scholarship to the young person when they are a freshman in high school and we have it going through and they don’t have to be a brilliant scholar. They can be a C student, but they’ve got to stay a good citizen, stay in school, graduate and then they can go to virtually any kind of school they want to go to — if they want to go to a vocational school, a tech school, wherever they want to go and so that’s what makes this unique is because that money grows all four years as they are in high school and then what it comes out to after it’s been invested for them, then they get it,’ said Clarkson.

Schievelbein says they also have traditional merit-based scholarships, but they try to use the money to make an impact for a larger group of students in the area.

“We go in and not only give them money but mentor these kids. We have entertainment with them. We have a pizza party with them and their families every year. We are working on doing a little bit of more mentorship with them. So, we are really trying to invest in them to encourage them to stick it out and push on and go on to pursue something when they graduate from high school,” said Schievelbein.

Individual tickets are $50 each, and event and table sponsorships are also still available. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 830-660-9286, 210-834-1149, 210-834-1240, or 210-232-1417, or visit Court Street Coffee Shop.
