A historic home in downtown Seguin may no longer serve as a residence, but it continues as a house for the people.
Recently, U.S. Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (Tx-15) and her staff officially opened a district office at 112 N. Travis St. with a ribbon cutting ceremony with local dignitaries and city residents.
“Our new office creates a permanent presence to serve the northern part of the 15th Congressional District,” she said. “Our district office is staffed full-time with constituent liaisons ready to serve residents across the region. I look forward to the positive results our team will achieve for constituents who need help with the VA, Social Security, the IRS, obtaining a passport and so much more.”
The house-turned-office, owned by Denise Sagebiel, will house full-time staff members to aid residents in the northern portion of De La Cruz’s district in a more convenient location, she said.
“We are very proud to bring this office to light in a beautiful home that is historic and with a family name that has been here for many, many years,” De La Cruz said. “I think what it shows the community is that this is their house, too.”
Since taking office in January 2023, De La Cruz’s staff has met with many constituents and helped complete almost 1,700 cases ranging from IRS and Social Security to VA and passport matters, she said. With the office opening earlier this year, De La Cruz’s staff has helped many residents, she said. But it’s not just in Seguin where her services reach, as her staff frequently visits other counties in District 15, De La Cruz said.
“We’ve actually made our constituent services mobile,” she said. “We might have our headquarters here, but I send a team to Wilson, a team to Live Oak to Karnes County, especially for our more mature population, 45 minutes might be very difficult for them to come this way. We’re very pleased.”
When looking for a location to house a district office, Seguin was the perfect fit from location to population and community engagement, De La Cruz said.
“Seguin was an important part of our decision making when it came to what city in the north should the district office be in,” she said. “We felt like this was the perfect place. It is 30 minutes from Karnes County, its about 30 minutes from Floresville, so it was going to be about a 30-minute drive. Population also made it a good place to be, as well as veteran services and community support.”
De La Cruz’s political affiliations have no bearing on who her staff helps and her doors are open to all, she said.
“I work in the People’s House and now the People’s House resides right here on Travis,” she said. “Whether you are red or blue, this office is red, white and blue. It is everybody’s house and I’m so thankful to represent.”
