Seguin, TX – October 22, 2024 – The Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is pleased to announce the groundbreaking of the Lawson Street Reconstruction Project, an infrastructure development that will not only support the continued growth of one of Seguin’s largest employers, Tyson Foods, but also unlock future opportunities for development in the area.
The Lawson Street Reconstruction Project marks the start of an infrastructure improvement aimed at enhancing transportation and accessibility around Tyson Foods’ Seguin facility. Tyson Foods, a cornerstone of the Seguin community since 1989, recently completed a $60 million expansion that added 40,000 square feet of production space and created more than 40 new jobs. This expansion solidifies Tyson’s longstanding commitment to Seguin, and the Lawson Street project will help ensure the area can accommodate increased traffic and future growth.
"The Lawson Street Reconstruction Project is a prime example of how strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors can create lasting benefits for our community,” said Josh Schneuker, Executive Director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation. “This project reinforces our commitment to building the infrastructure needed to support local businesses and drive economic development in the region."
The reconstruction of Lawson Street will involve significant upgrades. Approximately 1,091 linear feet of new concrete pavement will be installed along Lawson Street, stretching from U.S. Hwy 90 to a portion of C.H. Matthies Jr. Drive. In addition, curbs, sidewalks, and ramps will be constructed to improve pedestrian accessibility and safety. To manage surface water runoff, the project will also include the installation of cross-drainage culverts, an underground storm drain system, and roadside ditches. Furthermore, water and sanitary sewer utilities will be relocated to accommodate the new road design, ensuring the infrastructure meets the demands of the expanded area.
This initiative is made possible by a $1 million grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Rural Business Fund, with additional financial support from the City of Seguin, the SEDC, and Tyson Foods.
E-Z Bel Construction, LLC has been selected as the contractor for the Lawson Street Reconstruction Project, which has a total project cost of $1,916,973.74. The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2025.
Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen emphasized the importance of partnerships in making this project possible: “This collaboration between public and private partners is a testament to the power of working together to achieve a shared vision for our community. The Lawson Street Reconstruction Project will not only benefit Tyson Foods but will also create new opportunities for economic development that will shape the future of this area.”
The project is expected to significantly improve the infrastructure surrounding Tyson Foods’ facility, while creating new opportunities for the development of adjacent properties and enhancing the overall quality of life in Seguin.
