(Seguin) – You’re invited to help shape the future of the local workforce.

The Seguin Construction Trades Booster Club is extending an invitation to local businesses, employers, and community members to attend its upcoming Social this Thursday evening at the Seguin School Yard. The booster club works to promote careers in trades, engineering, construction, and related industries by encouraging Seguin High School students to pursue education and training in these fields.

Booster Club Member Tony Rivera says the evening will serve as an opportunity for networking and hearing updates on the booster club’s mission of supporting the next generation of skilled workers in Seguin.

“The initial program started as a way to help get donations to help get tools to kids who are around the sophomore year starting in the construction trades program here at Seguin High school. They get to keep the tools throughout their high school career and then when they graduate, they get to leave with the tools so that they can start into a career right away and then, we have kind of taken it a step further where they have certain projects that they work on – one being the tiny home and then, we want to engage the community more on what we are doing for these kids. We are starting to see more interest in the construction trades. We are actually looking to expand that program because of the resources that are being put into this. This social Thursday is to say ‘hey, here is what your funds have done. Thank you for your donation.’ We’d love to get new employers on board to help with the donations so we can keep with the tools, keep with the projects that they are all working on and really build this program up,” said Rivera.

Rivera says the club is excited to add new partnerships to its membership so that support for workforce development can continue to grow.

“The population here in Seguin – I don’t have the exact statistics but it’s around 70 percent of the students don’t go onto college. A lot come from low-income homes. So, in the interest of I guess why someone else would want to participate or support is this it is an ongoing program. Manufacturing is huge here in Seguin and surrounding areas and a lot of these kids are coming out of schools prior to this booster club without these skill sets so the interest is we need to continue to build that workforce that is going to continue to sustain this community,” said Rivera.

The free event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Seguin School Yard located at 225 N. Saunders St.
