(Seguin) — GRMC is reportedly one of the best places to work. A national healthcare publication is recognizing the local hospital for being one of the best places to earn a living. Guadalupe Regional Medical Center has been ranked by Modern Healthcare as one of the Best Places to Work in Healthcare for 2019.

Fay Bennett, GRMC vice president of employee services, says the results are based on anonymous surveys submitted by employees. The surveys were accepted by those who worked in a healthcare facility and not just at a hospital.

Bennett says a special supplement to Modern Healthcare’s Sept. 30 issue will include a featured ranked list of all the winners.

“We had a total of 623 surveys that are sent out to our staff because it’s only full-time and part-time employees. So 623 surveys went out. We had a participation of 46 percent that were completed and then I also had to submit a separate questionnaire that’s pretty extensive, asked a lot of things about our benefits, our culture, our turnover, what we do for engagement, recruitment, special activities throughout the year for our staff and then from all of the surveys and the questionnaire I send in, then they compile the results and they notified us that we were one of the top 100. Now, there’s an event on Sept. 26 in Dallas — a dinner — and we will find our exact ranking at that time. So, I’m not sure were we fall in the 100 but we’ll know in September,” said Bennett.

Bennett says over the years, she has seen how everyone at GRMC has made a contribution to being the best.

“It’s who we have become. I have been here for 30 years so I can say… has it always been like this? No. Is it an accident? No, but it has been an intentional effort and I give the credit — it starts with Mr. Haynes because he believes that you create this environment by having relationships and it’s one encounter at a time. You get a chance to make a difference everyday and everyday you come in and you try to be as positive and make a difference every single day and overtime, you kind of look up and go, ‘oh, look! Here we are!’ and it feels really good. It does,” said Bennett.

Although they can’t wait to see GRMC’s overall ranking, Bennett feels very positive. She says in the end, it’s the patients themselves who benefit from the adopted culture of being positive.

“It’s an honor I have to say to be recognized by them for this award and the culture begins with our CEO Robert Haynes because he along with our board of managers, they provide an environment for us and that allows us to all be our best and to give us the opportunity to make a difference for patients and for each other and it’s not just like something we say, it’s really something we live. There were open ended questions in that survey and we got the comments and over and over, that’s what employees say. Like, why do you like working here? “It’s a family. It’s the culture. People are friendly. People greet each other in the hallways and we hear it when we interview. We hear it from vendors,” said Bennett.

Aurora Aguilar, the editor of Modern Healthcare says despite the political headwinds that the industry faces, healthcare organizations continue to be dominant economic engines in their communities. She says organizations recognized on this year’s list have also weathered mergers and reorganizations and have come out stronger.

The extensive employee survey by Modern Healthcare was conducted with the help of Best Companies Group. GRMC will be honored at the 2019 Best Places to Work in Healthcare awards gala set for Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019.
