(Seguin) —  As a result of rising COVID-19 cases in Seguin and Guadalupe County in recent weeks, Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen says she has made the decision to cancel all events held on city property, effective this Wednesday, Dec. 16.

Dodgen says this decision was made based on the recent influx of COVID-19 hospitalizations at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, as well as the steady rise in COVID-19 cases being reported in Seguin. She says the event cancellations will extend through Feb. 1, 2021.

“That would be the Coliseum, the Fairgrounds, any of the sports complex and so it’s through Feb.1 and we will reevaluate at the end of January but it could actually and it will be reevaluated if the numbers drop drastically. This is just such a fluid situation but yes, any of the events that have been scheduled and already reserved for the sports complex, the fairgrounds, that sort of thing and of course, we won’t take anymore even for the parks or anything along that line although nothing has been scheduled for them,” said Dodgen.

Dodgen says public safety and what is best for our community drives her decision.

“We’ve noticed that it really has put a stress on our hospital and our staffing and our community providers have also indicated that the gatherings, that the larger they are, have increased the numbers and the potentiality and so we’ve been seeing a steady, steady increase. We are meeting more often with the hospital, the judge, the other mayors, the school district and so we see that happening and so with that, I just really couldn’t in good conscious, in thinking about the safety of our community, continue to be okay with large gatherings on what I had control over at the time is our city properties,” said Dodgen.

Dodgen says all she wants is for the community to be safe and healthy. She says it’s important for people to take care of each other and to be mindful of personal behaviors.

“I want to also encourage families, if they are going to gather, if they have to gather in large units, they have to have to practice good safety and sanitation. I would prefer that they not gather because that does seem to be what’s causing the numbers to move up but I do understand  that but please wash hands, stay social distanced, wear your mask and that’s tough in a large large gathering of people that you know. That often doesn’t happen and just think about it, if you are sick, stay home or if you are concerned, stay away so yes, this was a hard, hard decision to make,” said Dodgen.

Customers will receive full refunds for all facility bookings impacted by this public health emergency.

Because the COVID-19 pandemic is a fluid, ever-changing health crisis, the city says it will review case trends in late January 2021 to determine if the event cancellations can be lifted. Until then, they say the necessary precautions will be taken.
