(Seguin) — It’s remote learning these next four days for students at Seguin High School. The campus on Monday announced that students would finish out the fall semester at home.

Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says the total transition to virtual learning is in response to an increase in COVID-19 cases at the campus.

“The impetus for going virtual through Friday at Seguin High School and essentially shutting down our face to face operations is because we’ve seen COVID numbers go up since Friday, since last week. We are at about 11 confirmed cases at Seguin High School with about 150 students quarantined so going with the knowledge that our high school students are rather mature and are able to convert remote learning quickly, they are used to it, it’s something that they are well versed in so in an effort to keep the COVID numbers down and to keep our other campuses open as well especially our middle schools, the elementaries and Ball Early Childhood Center, we figured that one of the best methodologies to do this is to go remote learning for our high school students through the rest of the week,” said Hoffmann.

As for all other campuses, Hoffmann says those schools will continue to operate as they have been.

“We are monitoring and evaluating literally by the hour each day and looking at each campus, looking at numbers, looking at trends, seeing if we are seeing dramatic increases at campus. As we do, we will make adjustments as needed, as warranted. Right now, we feel as the high school is probably the safest campus to go to remote learning at this point and if we see in the next few days that we have to do something similar at another campus, we are not going to hesitate. We are not going to jeopardize our staff and our students. We’ll go ahead and go remote if needed but right now, the high school was the prudent thing to do,” said Hoffmann. “I think it’s important to add face to face learning opportunities this week will remain open for essential academic students and additionally, extra curricular practices after school, those will still be in place. Students can still attend those.”

Hoffmann says the district going virtual is just one more way to combat the numbers and remain proactive in its approach to the pandemic.

“We are all adjusting as we go. We are very grateful that we’ve been through this fall up until Dec. 14 without having to close any schools. Going in, we figured that it would be a given at some point but here were are, we are four days out from winter break and all of our schools have remained open and the high school, we are going to continue that instruction for four more days. It’s just going to be remote,” said Hoffmann.

Families are encouraged to visit the high school Facebook page to access the link for instructions on remote learning. Meals will also still be provided for pickup between 11:48  a.m. to 1:23 p.m. near the Performing Arts Center. Students without devices will also provided one on Tuesday through Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. and again from 4 to 6 p.m.
