(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD wants Texas Governor Greg Abbott to consider its teachers and staff as frontline workers in its ongoing battle to educate students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees recently passed a resolution requesting that Gov. Abbott designate school district staff members as “frontline workers” so that they be given the appropriate priority in the administration of the COVID vaccine as it becomes available.

According to the resolution to the governor, the Seguin ISD states, “although our district and our personnel as well as districts across the state have responded heroically to the challenges brought forth by COVID-19 regarding the delivery of instruction, issues persist in the quality of learning especially among students that would most benefit from live, face to face instruction. The Texas Department of Health recently reported 31,678 students and 18,742 school employees tested positive for COVID-19 and the board, having a substantial public interest in protecting the health and safety of its students, staff and community, therefore, desires to ensure that the school district and community be prepared to the fullest extent possible in light of COVID-19.”

The district further added that a substantial number of school district employees are more susceptible to complications and or death from COVID-19 due to age or pre-existing medical conditions.

The resolution was mailed to the governor’s office on Dec. 16.
