The brutal conditions endured during February’s freezing winter weather sparked a fire at the State Capitol to examine the resilience of Texas’ electrical grid.

After storms knocked out power for millions of Texans for days, the governor, state lawmakers and federal commissions have called for investigations into what caused the disaster. There seems to be a concerted effort to make sure the dire situation is not repeated, although it’s too early to say exactly what form any changes might take. 

The electricity grid operator, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, has received the bulk of the blame, for, among other shortfalls, the lack of weatherization of the state’s power sources. On March 4, Bill Magness, ERCOT's president and CEO, was terminated from his position.

On Feb. 24, Gov. Greg Abbott said the current legislative session “will not end” until lawmakers respond to the disaster. One priority is to overhaul ERCOT and to mandate and fund weatherization efforts across the state
