(Seguin) — GRMC’s board chairman is giving the local hospital a round of applause for its ability to offer the highest quality of care to its patients, all while operating during a pandemic.

Dr. James Lee, the chairman for the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center’s board of managers, publicly highlighted the hospital’s
efforts during Tuesday’s meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.

Dr. Lee says its handling of “all” patients during the COVID-19 pandemic has been nothing short than miraculous.

“2020-2021 had been stressful for everyone with the pandemic especially for hospitals across the country. But GRMC, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, the COVID patient load has varied between four and 44 patients. The high mark was 51 and those patients from Guadalupe County and surrounding counties that had been referred in.

We contended with three surges about 50 days apart, three of them. The current surge is the Delta virus winding down now and we have about 10 to 12 patients in the hospital at this time. Ninety percent of those patients that are in the hospital are unvaccinated and some breakthrough infections from vaccinated patients are in the hospital.

GRMC is slowly returning to normal with all services restarted. Remember, we had to stop surgeries because of needing the nurses to take care of COVID patients and shuffling them around. We have some nurses and respiratory personnel that were brought in to help with the current surge and will be leaving us in early December. This pandemic has been historic with more people dying than they did in the 1918-1919 Great Influenza. It’s historic, 800,000 people,” said Dr. Lee.

Dr. Lee says it’s the leadership of hospital administration and the dedication of each employee that continues to help pull this community through a very difficult time.

Even through these are challenging times, Dr. Lee says GRMC didn’t miss a beat when it came to being recognized for the work it was doing.
“You can see the accolades that the hospital has received this year. Women’s Choice Awards: Best Hospitals for Obstetrics; Best Hospitals for Safety; 100 Best Hospital for Patient Experience — that’s under Women’s Choice Awards. Leap Frog which they evaluate hospitals gave Safety (a) Grade A — our health grades, we are Five-Star Rating in Vaginal Deliveries seven years in a row; Five Star Rating Colon and Rectal Surgery and Five Star Rating Treatment of Heart Failure and Outstanding Patient Experience — Top 10 percent in the nation for Patient Experience; fourth consecutive year — the 2021 Top Five Percent in the Nation for Patient Experience and CMS Five Star Rating — a lot of five stars. So that’s good and also one other that I’d like to say is each year, we compete in the Best Hospital, Best Workplace and they announced the Top 100 out of about 1,000, we were 34 this past year so that is really good,” said Dr. Lee.

Topping the list of accolades is GRMC’s ranking as one of 28 acute care hospitals in Texas who have received a five-star quality rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Hospital officials note that’s 28 out of 450 in the state eligible to receive the five-star rating.
