Edible offerings in Seguin recently got a little bit sweeter. Late last month, a Shipley Do-Nuts location opened at the corner of Court Street and State Highway 123 Bypass, bringing with it sticky pastries and warm feelings for the customers, said Danny Chang, franchisee owner of the new donut shop.

“The people in Seguin are amazing,” he said. “They come in and they smile. I don’t know what it is, but they’re so happy.”

The happiness seems infections as it spreads to the employees when they help with Seguin residents’ orders.

“The people are really nice,” cashier Jalissa Sepulveda said.

Chang opened the shop Dec. 29 after three years of trying to get a franchise here, he said. Seguin’s community atmosphere made the city great for a Shipley shop, Chang said.

Judging from the response of visitors to the store in its nearly six weeks of operation, Seguin was ready, he said.

“The residents of Seguin have been loving Shipley and the shop has been busy since the day we opened our doors,” Chang said. “We make our donuts and kolaches fresh throughout each day in our kitchen. Shipley has been making ‘The World’s Greatest Do-Nut’ for 85 years, so we know how to make donuts and kolaches.”

Around the year 1936, Lawrence Shipley Sr. opened the first Shipley Donuts. His goal was to offer fresh, hot pastries throughout the day, according to the company’s corporate website.

Franchises strive for the same goal, said Chang, who also operates three other Shipley Do-Nuts in Killeen. The hot glaze variety is one of his favorites — along with the apple fritter — and is the best seller, Chang said.

“Donuts just put people in a good mood and make them smile, so I wanted to be in that business,” he said.

After leaving the United States Marine Corps about 15 years ago, Chang moved to Killeen. There, he helped run a convenience store with his sister, he said.

That was around the time she turned him on to Shipley, Chang said. He purchased a franchise and peddled donuts ever since.

“I’m stuck with Shipley since then,” Chang said. “They have a good product.”

In his newest location, Chang hired a staff of 15 employees to run the shop and all of them are from the Seguin area, the franchisee said.

Manager Ashley Flores started with the shop about two weeks before opening day and helped recruit the staff, she said. She remains pleased with her decision and the way things continue to work out, Flores said.

“I love it here,” she said. “It’s a really good establishment. The people are sweet.”

Shipley Do-Nut is open 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily at 130 S. Highway 123. He and his staff look forward to meeting and serving the community, Chang said.

He is planning a grand opening event soon. There the shop hand out 500 16-ounce stainless steel coffee mugs to those who visit the day of the event. Details of the event were not finalized by press time.
