As the summer sun continues to heat up South Texas so does a friendly competition between city of Seguin departments with the community’s children coming out the winners.

The city departments are hosting the first Back to School At the Pool celebration from noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Seguin Wave Pool.

The free event is bringing area children and the city departments together in a farewell bid to summer, but with the opportunity to start off the school right with new school supplies.

“The Seguin Police Department, Seguin Municipal Court, Seguin Facilities Department and Seguin Parks and Recreation are teaming up to gather either school bags or school supply donations or monetary donations,” Seguin Police Community Engagement Office Sarah Wallace said. “This is to help the community hopefully take the stress away of getting ready for school. We know times are pretty tough right now price-wise and we’re trying to find a way to give back to the kiddos in the community.”

The city employees are competing to see who can collect more donations, and so far, Wallace said the facilities team is raking in the donations.

“It’s phenomenal because the children are the winners,” she said. “We thought it would be fun to challenge the other departments. We thought it would help build up camaraderie between the different departments. This was one where if we challenged more departments with us, we knew the end goals would be more donations for the kids.”

The event will run much like the police department’s annual Badges, Bikes and Tykes, with city employees raffling off backpacks full of supplies. All of the children who go to the event will get a ticket and a chance to win something.

Additionally, the event will host a pair of service organizations and local barbers and beauticians offering free haircuts for the children, Wallace said.

Anyone wanting to donate backpacks, supplies or money can visit the Seguin Police Department at 350 N. Guadalupe St. or the Utility Billing Department at Seguin City Hall at 205 N. River St. For more information, email communityengagement@seguintexas.gov
