(Seguin) — There was plenty of room at The Table this past Sunday as Seguin gathered for a community Thanksgiving meal.

The free meal was served to local families thanks to a community effort of approximately 20 local churches, civic organizations and businesses.

They along with the city of Seguin wrapped up the holiday weekend by serving approximately 1,500 plates to folks throughout the community at the Seguin Coliseum.

Stopped in the parking lot by Seguin Radio KWED was local resident Jesse Castillo. Castillo was spotted carrying out one of the many door prizes of the day and says he was thankful for the invitation.

“It was real nice. I really enjoyed it and it’s not that often when you get something free nowadays and I was pleasantly surprised when I won this. I have never won anything in my life so it’s a game changer for me, “laughs Castillo.

Finishing up her meal with friends was local resident Anna Guadarrama. Guadarrama says she too was thankful for the community gathering.

“The meal was great. They had barbecue chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans and a roll, and they gave cookies for dessert and tea and water to drink. It’s really packed right here, and I think it’s great seeing everybody out and eating. I think it’s perfect considering that it’s something different than turkey. I think it’s great,” said Guadarrama.

Among those spotted in the large group of volunteers was Seguin’s very own Mayor Donna Dodgen. Dodgen says like Castillo and Guadarrama – those who stopped by for a meal shared nothing but gratitude to all those who helped make this happen.

“They are just really appreciative of this, and I think in all honesty I think they are a little taken a back about that we are doing it and there’s so much graciousness and love that they are feeling. It’s a little hard to take that sometimes and accept all of that and so it’s just wonderful that they are here, and they are just saying thank you and we are saying thank you to all of us,” said Dodgen.

Dodgen says for her, the day was simply about being a servant and says the event was just one more example of how the Seguin community is a community of love and support.

“I am just volunteering and being a servant today and so this is an incredible, incredible thing for our city of Seguin and it’s just about being of love and being of service and so this just really brings community home,” said Dodgen.

The invitation was extended to anyone in the community who simply wanted a warm delicious meal. The meal was a welcomed gesture especially after COVID and other challenges forced the cancellation of other similar traditions in the community.
