(Seguin) — The Seguin ISD is officially under new leadership.

The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees on Thursday unanimously approved the hiring of Dr. Veronica Vijil as the district’s new superintendent of schools. Dr. Vijil, who arrived in Seguin last summer to serve as the deputy superintendent, quickly found her way to the interim position following the resignation of former Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez in September. After being named as the lone finalist for the position, Vijil on Thursday was publicly presented with a contract following the mandated 21 day waiting period.

Dr. Vijil says she is excited about the opportunity and looks forward to continuing the work.

“I am so thrilled to be working with this team of eight and with the team that I work with every single day, boots on the ground, everybody the same — having children at the forefront of our decisions and so we say we might not agree about everything in a room but we walk out and we are a one team in agreement of what we are doing is in the best interest of kids,” said Vijil.

Trustees in January opted to not go out for an official search for superintendent and instead named Vijil as its lone finalist. Trustees said their decision was based on her proven record and previous experience leading the Fabens ISD, a B rated district.

While serving as interim, trustees also believed that Vijil had already made positive changes districtwide, and that she continues to bring new ideas to the table.

Ready to support Dr. Vijil even more is School Board President Alejandro Guerra.

“Dr. Vijil’s previous experience in education have resulted in strong leadership skills and has also given her the capability to deal with challenges that our district is currently facing. Dr. Vijil is a strong believer in transparency. We selected Dr. Vijil as superintendent for Seguin ISD because one of her main goals is to turn this district around. This process will not happen overnight but rather in steps. Steps that will require some changes so we ask our district staff, students, families, and community members to support the changes that will ultimately result in producing positive student outcomes. As we move forward, we need to focus on the positive activities in our district and identify the areas for improvement along with implementing the property corrective actions. The continuous improvement process never ends,” said Guerra.

Dr. Vijil was awarded a three-year contract that includes a base salary of $231,000.
