(Geronimo) — The new Navarro High School is on its way up. The Navarro ISD is celebrating the pouring of concrete for the new voter approved building.

Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley says this is a significant milestone in the construction of the new school.

“Certainly, when we saw that concrete coming in and really setting that foundation, it’s so exciting to know that that school is being constructed and to know the kids that will be impacted in that building and that our taxpayers have really blessed us with a faith to continue to grow buildings, to grow kids,” said Epley.

District officials say this recent achievement marks a pivotal moment in the realization of the project, which was made possible by the overwhelming support of voters during the bond election held in November 2021.

Epley says the best parts of the journey have been involving the students and community members in this process.

“As the steel is coming in, we know that’s the next step in seeing that building go vertical and that will be exciting as well. We have plans and an opportunity for community members and our teachers and students to be able to sign  one of those beams and put our hopes and wishes for what will happen in the building actually on the building and we are looking forward to that as the next step as we move forward but it is truly an exciting time to see that growth in action,” said Epley.

The construction of the new high school comes as a response to the rapid growth experienced by Navarro ISD. From a population of 1,812 students in the 2016-2017 school year, the district has seen remarkable growth, with 2,467 students enrolled as of January 2024.

This upward trend they say is projected to continue, with Zonda Education forecasting a population of 6,049 students in the district by the 2033-2034 school year.

Epley says not only is the construction underway for the new building but the planning to make the transition of students into the new campus is also in the works.

“At this point, we are looking to November 2025 and our plan would be to look at moving the existing high school over for the second semester if that indeed holds true – you know weather and conditions are certainly something that we hope we have days like we’ve had in these last few weeks so that the progress continues but we will be able to move the high school over for the second semester of that school year and that will give us a semester to prepare the junior high to be ready – that’s the former high school – to become the new junior high facility and so we would prepare that facility, do the rebranding of that facility, clean it out, be ready for those students to start the following year in the old high school as the new junior high,” said Epley.

Groundbreaking for the new Navarro High School took place on September 13, 2023. The new Navarro High School is scheduled to open its doors to students in the 2025-2026 school year.
