Following a very long wait, travelers on Seguin’s north side can expect to see movement on a much-needed road construction project.

Seguin City Council at a recent meeting approved awarding a $15.4 million construction contract to Sterling Delaware Holding Company for the first phase in the Rudeloff Road expansion project, said Melissa Reynolds, director of Seguin’s Capital Projects and Engineering Department.

“I could not be more excited to bring this project to construction,” she said. “This project will provide increased mobility for not only vehicular traffic but also bikes and pedestrians with 10-foot concrete paths on either side of the reconstructed roadway. With this being phase one of a two-phase project, our team is aware of the need to maintain safety and work to ensure construction impacts are as painless as possible for residents in the area.”

The first phase of improvements is scheduled for a 1.5-mile section of Rudeloff from State Highway 46 to Huber Road, according to a news statement the city released. Improvements include widening the road from two lanes to four or five.

Crews will add concrete hike-and-bike trails on each side of the street and improve drainage in the area, the statement read. The job has an expected completion timeline of summer 2026.

“After long delays caused by a hold on federal funding, I’m thrilled that the Rudeloff Road Phase I project will finally begin construction in May,” said City Councilman Jim Lievens, who represents the district the project is in. “It’s wonderful that the infrastructure needs of the city’s high-growth north side are starting to be met.”

He looks forward to the city making announcements about phase two and the Cordova Road projects on the heels of the first phase, Lievens said.

Also acknowledging the rate at which growth is affecting the area, Seguin City Manager Steve Parker highlighted the good Rudeloff’s first phase of improvements will provide.

“We hope to deliver a project that will increase quality of life with increased mobility and safety for existing residents but also future residents in an area experiencing so much fast-paced growth,” he said.

The Rudeloff project is years in the making. In January 2017, the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization awarded Seguin funding for the project and the city began designing it later that year, according to the city’s statement.

City staffers worked to acquire rights of way and easements, and secure environmental clearance in preparation for the project. The Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization granted the city additional funding in October 2023.

City Council voted Tuesday to move forward with the project.

“This project is such a testament of partnerships and team efforts to provide mobility improvements to our region,” Parker said. “The project is being delivered thanks to support from the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and our partners at Texas Department of Transportation. They deserve much thanks for all the assistance and backing they have provided.”

He also thanked city staff members who worked to help bring the project too Seguin.
